United stop the rot in the League

On a warm Saturday afternoon, Milton United claimed a share of the points, drawing 1-1 with Highworth Town.

Kicking up the hill first half, United had to play with their back against the walls for the first 25 minutes, with Highworth starting strong and seeing Craig Griffiths in goal for the away team, keep out a number of golden opportunities, first blocking Dan Drewitt from close range then turning and diving backwards to deny Callum Parsons, who must have thought he had a certain goal when rounding the keeper.

United grew into the game and started to put their foot on the ball, creating chances of their own - including a strike from Adam Bruce that whistled past the top right corner of the goal, from outside the left of the box.

Then, after 30 minutes, Highworth's front two caused problems on the edge of the box, eventually freeing up Callum Parsons, who from just to the right of the penalty spot, drove the ball right footed across the goalkeeper into the bottom left, despite the despairing lunge from Brad Chalmers.

Both teams created chances in the time that followed, and on 41 minutes, Tom Austin was brought down on the edge of the home teams box, just right of centre. The winger brushed himself down and proceeded to bend a right footed freekick, over the wall, into the top righ corner of the goal and in the process leaving the goalkeeper stone footed and unable to move.

HT 1-1

The second half again saw chances for both teams, but with most of the action being in the middle third of the pitch.

Milton had a number of chances, but failed to trouble Elliot Jackson in the home goal., including chances from Bruce and substitute Harry Dalton.
Highworth had a few of their own, including a shot from Levi Cox the brought a smart save out of Griffiths low to his right. Highworth almost won it through a rasping volley from Parsons, coming from ex United player Tom Butlers cross, but the volley went over and the referee shortly after blew his whistle.

A good result for Milton, who hadn't picked up a point since March 5th, and will take heart going into the Bluefin Sports Supplementary Challenge Cup - Quarter Final vs Headington Amateur's on Thursday the 7th.

It also shows what can happen when we are able to field our full first team.
