A catch up from the chairman

On behalf of everyone at Milton United FC, I would like to extend a warm welcome to Chalfont St Peter Football Club and their supporters, for the return fixture after both clubs met back in early October. Chalfont will be travelling to The Heights looking for revenge, after Milton came away from Mill Meadow with all three points. It was young Cameron Mills that grabbed the limelight that afternoon, as he twice burst through the opponents’ defence to calmly finish on the 2nd and 17th minute. From what I can remember the game was quite evenly balanced and it was Milton that had to dig deep in the last 20 minutes to see out the result.
Neither team head into tonight match brimming with confidence. Milton have lost the last four matches, two cup and two league and Chalfont’s last point in the league came from a 2-2 draw against Virginia Waters on the 16th of December. Milton’s last game, after being impressive away from home in the league, resulted in a 4-1 loss at North Greenford. Last Saturdays scheduled game at home to Burnham, like so many this season fell foul of the weather, resulting in a waterlogged pitch. Our opponents last match was in fact away at Burnham last Wednesday, where the match finished 3-2 in favour of the home side. So, with a home team that performs better away and an away team that is looking for their first points 2024, who knows which way tonight’s result will go.
As previously mentioned, our lads last match was an away trip on the 17th to North Greenford, to face a team full of confidence having qualified for the Quarter Finals of the FA Vase the previous weekend. Definelty the poorest first half performance of the season ensued and a 4-0 deficit at half-time was not what the doctor ordered. A couple of substitutions and a change of formation (and some choice words in the changing room no doubt) led to a much-improved 2nd half. A fine finish from Cameron Mills, within a minute of the re-start provided the ideal platform to kick on, however Greenford’s goalie pulled off a string of fine saves and thwarted any chance of Milton getting anything from the match.
Since our last home game, when the lads defeated Wembley 1-0 with a 95-minute winner from Ty Lee, we have lost four games on the bounce. Our Berks & Bucks Senior Cup journey ended at Maidenhead, when a 4-0 final score saw us exit the competition. When you are facing a Step 1 team, mistakes will be punished and when three avoidable errors were made, each one resulted in a goal. Regardless of the result, the lads did Milton proud, enjoyed the occasion and earned nothing but respect from the home officials and board members for the way they performed on the night.
Another shambolic experience against Hilltop followed, when the Saturday fixture had to be brought forward at short notice to the Friday night and re-located to Beaconsfield Town FC. Like when we faced Hilltop at home and had to delay the KO due to their poor administration, the preparation once again had an unsettling influence on our lads and a ‘hangover’ from the Senior Cup, resulted in a 4-1 loss.
The reversed League Cup match was another fixture full of issues after a floodlight failure at the Riverside meant Reading could not host the game. Milton offered to host, Reading refused the offer and proposed Henley FCs ground as the alternative venue. At short notice Henley was deemed unsuitable and yep, you guessed it, Milton ended up hosting the fixture. The weather was so atrocious, the fixture should have been abandoned and when we conceded in the 90th & 95th minute the tie ended 2-1 and we were out of the Premier League Cup.
Anyway, let us finish on some good news. The plans for the new building were displayed to the Parish last Wednesday and the planning permission has now been registered with the Vale Councill. Images of the building are on display in clubhouse, so please see either Tim or me if you have any questions.
As ever, a big thank you to all our Club and Team Sponsors, our Volunteers, and today’s supporters.
All the best and enjoy the game.
UP THE MILTONIANS
